Jewish district inhabited exclusively by Jews who can move freely within its perimeter, unseparated from other parts of the city, and accessible to Germans and Poles. Jews wishing to leave an open ghetto had to obtain special passes issued by local authorities.
Such open ghettos existed in almost all cities of the Wartheland from 1940 to 1942 and only a few of them were sealed before the liquidation and resettlement of the Jews to Łódź. Ghettos of this kind were actually only Jewish residential districts and since they had contact with the rest of the population, were only partly dependent on meager food rations assigned by the authorities. Until April 30, 1940, the Łódź ghetto was also open.
