Ivan Blows the Shofar Horn. Popular saying used in the vernacular for the situation when domestic policy for Jews is shaped by non-Jewish authorities. In the ghetto, the expression referred to cases when internal Jewish disagreements were settled by intervention of the ghetto administration. The expression “Ivan bloost shoyfer” referred especially to the scandal of November 12, 1943, that resulted in assumption of responsibility for food distribution among inhabitants through the ghetto administration, not taking into account the specific relationships in the ghetto, thereby introducing ambiguity in that area of the ghetto’s autonomy.
