Carried out on December 17–18, 1939, after the Jews living on Zgierska St. and several side-streets had been abruptly expelled from their homes at night and authorities announced that the Jews were to leave Łódź voluntarily or be forced to do so. The Community began signing those willing to go, providing each departee with 50 zł. Registered persons were grouped together and sent with their belongings to Abbe’s former factory in Radogoszcz (vide
Abbe's Factory in Radogoszcz), which had been adapted for a collective camp. From there they were taken to the vicinity of Kraków (Tarnów, Jasło, and other places). Since the Community ran out of Polish currency and no permission was given to hand it out, the departees received cash late at the last minute, late at night. The money was brought to Abbe’s former factory and distributed there by Community officials.
In charge of the operation were Władysław Jeleń (vide) and Henryk Neftalin (vide). Assisting them in formal matters as well as the exchange and distribution of money was also R. Pływacka, a practicing lawyer. Officials involved in the operation received special documents from the Gestapo allowing them to move within the ghetto and outside it. Those were first such documents issued to the Jews.
