As autumn 1940 saw an increasing shortage of fuel, some House Committees (vide [Hauskomitee]) came up with the idea of creating common kitchens in order to guarantee a hot beverage to housemates. They sold a liter of coffee for 5 pfennig.

After the dissolution of these committees, private individuals took over making coffee. The cost of a liter of coffee depended on the price of wood and coal.

Afterwards, the Jewish Community created gas kitchens wherein coffee as well as hot water was issued at certain times of the day with coffee at a fixed price of 10 pfennig per liter.

The Kitchen Department (B.Praszkier [vide Burech]) was responsible for the organization of the coffee kitchens.
