Inhabitants of the Łódź district of Bałuty who had lived there before the ghetto was established; in other words, the original residents of the infamous area, as opposed to those Bałuty residents who were deported there during the outsettlement of Jews from Łódź. The term “Reichsbaluter” was coined as being analogous to the word “Reichsdeutscher,” meaning an ethnic German from the Reich as opposed to a German citizen – or rather “Volksdeutscher” from the annexed territories. The name “Reichsbaluter” does not have a positive connotation.
