The Department of the Jewish Community in Łodź, reorganized in the first days of the war. Established on October 7, 1939, the bureau was located at 17 Cegielniana St. and tasked with providing workers from the Jewish Community to meet a quota for the hard physical labor the authorities required, thus to prevent the “catching” of Jewish passers-by from the streets for work. For this purpose, the Bureau registered all Jews aged 18-to-60 capable of physical work, who were then constantly appointed for labor as per the quota set by the authorities. Those who wished to be exempt from this obligation without valid reason could buy themselves out of each occurrence for a fee of 5 zł (2.50 Rm). In their place, the department employed paid workers, regularly provided by the authorities as requested.
After the offices of the municipalities had been evacuated to the ghetto in March 1940, the Arbeits-Einsatz was located at 10 Podrzeczna St. On June 1, 1940, Chairman Rumkowski dissolved the Arbeits-Einsatz. For a long time, until the liquidation, the head of the department was Z. Reingold [(vide)] who was later the Commissioner of the Order Service (OS) and head of the Special Unit and afterwards, Commissioner of the Groceries and Bread Department.
