Wohngebiete der Juden, or Jewish residential area, was a term that began appearing in the German press and in documents in 1940 announcing the separation of Jewish residents in the northern part of Łódź (vide Ghetto Establishment Ordinance). This term preceded the official use of the word “ghetto” (vide). Although it appeared in Holocaust architect Reinhard Heydrich's order of 21 September 1939 – along with Gebiete (area) and Konzentierungspunkt (concentration point), it– was not widely used during the first period of the war.
