Chairman Rumkowski often contemplated the idea of decorating people for outstanding services. He also ordered the design of the ghetto medal, but later resigned from the idea. As he really could rule like a prince in his small state (especially during the first three years of the existence of the ghetto), it’s easy to understand the temptation to make such gestures of sovereignty. He wrote various letters of commendation. In the winter of 1943/44, he ordered small certificates of merit from the printery to be awarded in person to certain personalities with an amount of ghetto notes which he himself signed.
